With the great contributions of all generations of professors, lecturers, graduates and students of the university to the nation, VIMARU has been being honor to receive many noble awards given by Government of Vietnam, such as Labour Hero in the Renewal Process (2006), President Ho Chi Minh Medal (2011), the first, second and third-class Independent Medal and Labour Medals, as well as many other noble titles.
In November 2002, VIMARU was recognized as a full member of the Association of Maritime Education and Training Institutions in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP) and, especially, the full member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) in August 2004.
In May 2005, VIMARU successfully passed the Quality Management System Accreditation of the Directorate for Standards and Quality (STAMEQ) and honorably became the first university among the higher education institutions in Vietnam which was granted the Certificate of Conformity with the ISO 9001:2000

- On April 1, 2018 Vietnam Maritime University is honored by Ministry of Education and Training to be awarded the accreditation certificate of higher education quality and VMU also has reached the top 15 universities in Vietnam among the system of over 300 universities and national institutes
